农历是以月相盈亏兼顾太阳周年视运动两个自然周期为依据制定，一年12个月，全年354天或355天。一个公历年和一个农历年相差11天左右。“经年累月”下去就会发生农历年的月份与季节不能对应、寒暑颠倒的现象。

为使农历年与公历年能基本对应，农历采取置闰的方法来调节，也就是在19年中安排7个闰月，置闰的规则不是随机的，而是根据二十四节气来确定。二十四节气是将地球绕太阳运行的轨道即黄道，以15度为间隔等分为24份，又分为12个节气和12个中气，二者相间排列。农历历法规定，每个农历月都有一个中气，如果某个月中不包含中气，就算作上一个月的闰月。

为何会出现没有中气的月份？“平均而言，一个农历月为29.5306天，小于两个中气之间的间隔时间，这样累计下来必然会出现一个只有节气没有中气的月份。”杨婧解释说。

杨婧表示，闰月现象每隔2年至3年就会出现一次，且多发生在四月至八月，二月、三月、九月、十月少有发生，一月、十一月和十二月则极为罕见。闰六月并不罕见，本世纪这100年里共有六次，分别是2017年、2025年、2036年、2055年、2074年和2093年。

很多人将近期的极端炎热天气与闰六月相关联。“闰六月只是一种正常的历法现象，无关气候异常。”杨婧说。
